The University of Michigan Law School is proving that success with #AI belongs to those who use it to refine their perspective rather than just automate their output.

Instead of banning generative technology, Michigan is mandating its use for a specific supplemental essay. By requiring applicants to use AI to develop a response about their own future usage of the tool, the school is testing a candidate’s ability to engage in a sophisticated digital dialogue.

This shift highlights why asking the right questions is the ultimate social and academic skill:

Precision-> In law and in life, a vague question yields a useless result. Using AI requires „prompt engineering,“ which may be a digital version of logical precision.

Active Listening-> To ask a great follow-up question in a social context, you have to synthesize what you have heard. AI forces a similar synthesis to get the right results.

Critical Thinking-> Michigan’s prompt forces students to think critically about the tool itself rather than just the final output.

In academia and social settings alike, we often focus on having the „right“ answers. But the real skill, the one that builds deep understanding and effective communication, is the ability to ask the right questions.
